The SSI Open Water Diver Course combines theoretical knowledge with practical diving skills to ensure a well-rounded learning experience. The course typically includes online or in-person classroom sessions covering essential diving principles, such as buoyancy control, equipment usage, and underwater navigation. Practical training takes place in confined water environments like pools, where students practice essential skills under the guidance of certified instructors. Once you’re comfortable, you’ll move to open water dives, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in real-world conditions. By the end of the course, you’ll be certified to dive up to 18 meters (60 feet) independently with a buddy, unlocking a world of underwater opportunities.

Course Prerequisites
- Ability to swim 200 meters unaided.
- Ability to tread water for 10 minutes.
- Minimum age: 10 yearsÂ
- Reasonable physical fitness.
- All participants are required to complete a medical questionnaire to ensure no underlying conditions will cause problems while diving. The medical questionnaire can be found here.
The course is held over 2.5 to 3 days and here is how the schedule could look like. We have set boat departure times twice a day, however if you have a packed schedule or a booked ferry, we will try to accommodate you as best as possible.
Day 1:Â
- 8:30 am – Knowledge Review session with your instructor. This ensures all doubts over dive theory is cleared and all questions are answered.
- 9:30 am to 12:00 pm – Equipment orientation followed by swimming pool training session.
- 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm – Lunch break.
- 1:15 pm – Pre dive briefing by instructor.
- 2 pm – Off for first dive from the boat. Maximum depth 12 meters.
- 3:45 pm – Equipment disassembly, maintenance and debriefing.
Day 2:
- 9:15 am – Equipment assembly and dive briefing.
- 10 am – Off for dive 2 from the boat. Maximum depth 12 meters.
- 11:45 am – Equipment disassembly and debriefing.
- 12:15 pm to 2 pm – Lunch break.
- 2 pm to 4 pm – Swimming pool training session.
Day 3:Â
- 9:30 am – Equipment assembly and dive briefing.
- 10 am – Off for dive 3. Maximum depth 18 meters.
- 11:45 am – Debriefing.
- 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm – Lunch break.
- 2 pm – Off for 4th and final dive. Maximum depth 18 meters.
- 3:45 pm – Equipment disassembly, debriefing, dive logging, final exam and paperwork sign off.
- 5 pm – Certification!
